Sperling High Mass Turntable L-1

The Sperling L-1 is a true heavyweight reference turntable, weighing between 50 and 60 kg and built around a massive aluminium base that carries the main bearing, platter and twin tonearm supports. It is designed to combine very low noise, extreme stability and flexible arm mounting in a single, visually striking deck that can anchor the most ambitious analogue systems.

Two separate tonearm bases accept arms from 9 to 12 inches and use an ingenious rotating mechanism, so you can position virtually any arm at the correct geometry while keeping a rock-solid mechanical connection. The platter uses machined grooves for exchangeable inlays in materials such as wood, shale and POM, letting you fine tune the record interface, while the outboard motor with M-2 housing allows belt (tape) tension to be adjusted during playback for precise control of drive feel and tonality.

Description

Type: High mass belt / tape driven turntable with separate motor unit
Weight: Approx. 50 to 60 kg total; platter alone around 25 to 27 kg (55 to 60 lb)
Drive system:
Outboard motor driving the platter with recording tape leader (tape belt)
M-2 motor housing with fine adjustment of belt tension while running
Speeds: 33â…“ and 45 rpm, adjustable via external control unit and strobe
Chassis / base:
Massive aluminium support milled from solid on CNC machines
Carries the bearing and most of the platter mass
Three heavy, height-adjustable feet, with the central foot directly under the bearing acting as an energy drain into its floor disc
Platter:
High density aluminium-alloy platter
Precision machined grooves on the top surface for exchangeable inlays
Inlays available in materials such as wenge wood, Portuguese argillaceous shale and POM to tailor damping and tonality
Tonearm bases:
Two separate bases, each carrying one tonearm from 9 to 12 inches
Innovative rotating mechanism allows almost any mounting distance and angle while keeping a rigid screw fixing
Scaled top surfaces let you remove and later refit an arm and base to exactly the same position, useful when swapping multiple arms
Motor and control:
External motor housing in matching machined enclosure
Dedicated control unit with 33â…“ / 45 rpm selection and trim for fine speed adjustment
Finishes: Various combinations of metal and wood, including acrylic/silver, walnut/black and wenge/silver
