Sperling High Mass Turntable L-3
The Sperling High Mass Turntable L-3 is a heavyweight, outboard-motor record player that combines serious engineering with a very flexible, modular layout. A CNC milled solid aluminium base carries the bearing and most of the massive platter, with provision for one or two tonearm bases that each accept arms from 9 to 12 inches. Handling is deliberately practical and robust, yet the overall aesthetic is clean and architectural.
The platter is machined from a special aluminium alloy and accepts exchangeable inlays that sit in precision cut grooves. These inlays are available in different woods, acrylic, POM and other materials, so you can fine tune the coupling and tonality to taste. Drive comes from an outboard motor unit that uses recording tape leader as the belt, giving very high torque and speed stability at 33â…“ and 45 rpm.
Description

Type: High mass belt / tape driven turntable with separate motor unit
Drive system: Outboard motor driving the platter with recording tape leader (tape belt)
Speeds: 33â…“ and 45 rpm, fine adjustable via external control unit and strobe disc
Base / chassis:
Aluminium support milled from solid on CNC machines
Carries the main bearing and most of the platter mass
Platter:
Special aluminium alloy platter
Precision machined grooves on top for inlays
Exchangeable inlays in various materials such as different woods, acrylic, POM and others to tune the sound
Tonearm bases:
Up to two separate tonearm bases can be fitted
Each base accepts one tonearm from 9 to 12 inches
Rotating mechanism allows almost any mounting distance and angle while retaining a solid screw fixing
Second arm base can be retrofitted later
Arm base scaling: Integrated scale on the top of each base so a pre-aligned arm and cartridge can be removed and refitted in exactly the same position in minutes, or moved between compatible Sperling decks
Motor and control unit:
External motor housing supplied with matching base
Dedicated control unit with 33â…“ / 45 rpm selection and trim pots for precise speed adjustment
Power supply accepts 110 to 240 V, 50 or 60 Hz (universal voltage)
Mounting / support: Heavy drive unit with adjustable feet and supplied floor disc for proper grounding of the bearing and chassis
Compatibility: Wide range of tonearms supported via dedicated base plates, including many high-end models from Kuzma, Durand, Graham and others (base plates specified at order)
